Day 7: Result and Answers

Day 7 Answers:
Pic 1: Eddy Merckx - Considered to be one of the greatest cyclists of all time, he won the Tour-de France five consecutive times from 1969 till 1974. The record was later broken by Lance Armstrong . He was nicknamed as "The Cannibal", because he seemed to devour his competition.
Pic 2: Naim Suleymanoglu - Nicknamed "Pocket Hercules" because of his small stature. Born in Bulgaria, he later defected to Turkey. In order for him to compete in the 1988 Seoul olympics ,Turkey has to pay $1,000,000 to Bulgaria. He did not disappoint and won the featherweight gold for Turkey. In total he won three olympic, seven world, six european championships and earned 46 world records.
Pic 3: Oscar Pistorius aka Blade Runner - The South African paralympic runner, often called the "Blade Runner" or the "Fastest man with no legs" , he is a world record holder in 100m, 200m, and 400m . He runs with the aid of Cheetah flex foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs , made by Ossur. Initially, he was ruled in eligible to compete in the summer olympics by the IAAF, a decision that was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Oscar, hoever, did not qualify for the Summer olympics. He took the gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m in the 2008 Paralympics.
Pic 4: Haile Gebrselassie - Considered one of the greatest long distance runners in History, this Ethiopean was first noticed for running in a Marathon barefoot- and winning it. He competes in the distances between 1500m and Marathon. He suffers from Athletically induced asthma, which prevented him from competing in the Beijing olympics marathon.
Pic 5: Anatoly Karpov - KArpov became the youngest world champion in 1974,when the defending Champion Bobby Fischer refused to play Karpov. He successfully defended his world championship until, 1985 , when he was defeated by Gary Kasprov.Karpov,later won the FIDE championship in 1993 which he defended till 1998. Apart from chess, Karpov also took an active interest in politics and has been a member of the Public Chamber of Russia since 2005.
Pic 6: Billie Jean King - The former world no:1 , is best remembered for defeating Bobby Riggs in the much publicised exhibition match billed the "Battle of the Sexes". She won six wimbledon singles, 10 doubles and four mixed doubles titles in Wimbledon. In the US open, she won four singles and five doubles title. She also won singles title at the French and Australian open.
Pic 7: Rocky Marciano - He is the only undefeated heavyweight champion in professional boxing history. He was famous for weeping after knocking out his childhood hero Joe Louis. By the time hhe retired, he had a record og 49-0 with 43 knockouts.
Pic 8: Dhyan Chand - The Hockey wizard, he was instrumental in building up of the legend that surrounds the Indian Hockey team of 1920's - 40's . Once Don Bradman is believed to have commented that he scores goals like runs in cricket. Legends have it that impressed by his performance in the 1936 Berlin olympics, Adolf Hitler offered to make him a Field Marshal in the german army, should he decide to play for Germany.
Pic 9: Nadia Comaneci - The best known gymnasts of all time, this Romanian broke into limelight by winning three golds, on silver and a bronze in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She again won the individual golds in the floor excercise adnd balance beam events at the 1980 moscow olympicsShe is known as the first gymnast to score a perfect 10.
Background Pic: Lev Yashin -Nicknamed "The Black Spider" and "Black Panther" , he is considered by many to be the best goal keeper ever. The trophy for the best goal keeper in the world-cup competition is named after him. He is credited with inventing the idea of goalkeeper sweeping. He was part of the Soviet team that won the 1956 olympic gold and the 1960 European Championship.He won the European footballer of the year award in 1963.
