Definitely Not "The End"

Ladies and Gentlemen,
With this, we come to the end of this year's Treasure Trove Events. It has been really a great experience for us, at this end, framing all those visual question, though we had made our share of mistakes too. We thank one and all, for their overwhelming participation.

Pic 1: Jean Paul Sartre – French Exintentialist philosopher, playwright, and Novelist, he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1964, which he refused to accept. Best known for his philosophical treatise “Being and Nothingness” , novel “Nausea” , plays “no exit”, “Trojan Women” among others. He was known for his outspoken political views. He supported Algerian independence from France,supported opposed the French and American involvement in Vietnam. In response to calls for Sartre’s arrest for exhorting French troops in Algeria to desert, President Charles de Gaulle is believed to have commented “One does not arrest Voltaire”. He had a long running relationship with philosopher Simone du Beauvoir.

Pic 2: Enrico Fermi – Italian Physicist, credited to be the first person first demonstrate that controlled fission reaction is possible. He won the Nobel prize for Physics in 1938 for his works on Nuclear science. He defected to the US in 1938, because of the anti semitic laws effected by Benito Mussolini’s regime. (His wife was Jewish). During the second world war, he was involved in the Manhattan project, the US effort to build an Atomic bomb. An artificial element that was discovered from the debris after Operation Ivy, a series of nuclear tests by America, was named Fermium in his honour.

Pic 3: Ivan Pavlov: Best known for his experiments concerning conditioned reflexes, he was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine/physiology for his pioneering works on the physiology of the digestive system.

Pic 4: Richard Feynman : American Physicist, best known for his “Feynman lectures on physics”, and his semiautobiographical accounts “Surely you’re joking Mr.Feynman” and “What do you care what other people think”. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1956, for his role in the development in the theory of quantum electrodynamics. He developed a widely used pictorial representation of the mathematical expressions governing behaviour of subatomic particles, which later came to be known as the Feynman diagrams. He was one person who did not confirm to the stereotypical images of scientists- he was also known as a juggler, prankster, amateur magician, amateur painter and a bongo player.

Pic 5: Rigoberta Menchu- Guatemalan activist for human rights and the rights of the indigenous people, she was once exiled by the Guatemalan military for her political affiliations. Her book “Me Llamo Rigoberta Menchu Y Asi Nacio Conciena” translated as “I, Rigoberta Menchu” , became famous as a portrayal of a little known, dying culture and an un-official account of the internal conflicts of Guatemala. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992, subsequent to which she was allowed to return to Guatemala. She also contested in the Presidential elections in 2007, but could draw only 3% of popular vote.

Pic 6: Marie Curie – Polish-born French chemist and physicist, she won the Nobel prize twice – one in Physics and One in Chemistry, she is best known for her investigations of radioactivity with her husband Pierre Curie. The Curies shared the Nobel prize for Physics in 1903 and Marie Curie won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1911. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize. Her Daughter Irene-Joliot Curie and son-in Law Fredric Joliot Curie, are also Nobel Laureates. She has an element Curium named after her and Pierre. She was the subject of a film “Madame Curie” and was portrayed by Greer Carson.

Pic 7: Gerry Adams - President of the Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, he is credited with having played an important role in helping to end the civil war in Northern Ireland through the Good Friday Agreement.

Pic 8: James Watson - Best known as one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA, along with Francis Crick, he was the co-winner of the 1962 Nobel Prizein Physiology or Medicine. He was appointed as the director of the Human Genome project at the National Institute of Health. He was particularly known for making a statement linking race and intelligence.

Pic 9: Joseph Stiglitz – A former chief economist of the World Bank, and an economic advisor to Bill Clinton , he today is known as one of the outspoken critics of the world economic order and institutions such as IMF, World Bank and WTO. He won the Nobel Prize in economics in the year 2001. He is well known for his books “Stability with Growth: Macroeconomic, Liberalization and Development”, “Globalization and its Discontents”, “Making Globalization Work”, “Wither Socialism” among others.

Background Pic: Pablo Neruda – Born Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basualto , he is better known by his nom-de-plume , Pablo Naruda. First recognized for his “Twenty love poems and a song of despair”, he later came to be better known for his poetry laced with political overtones, influenced by his involvement in the Spanish Civil War and the Chilean Communist movement . He is said to have withdrawn his presidential nomination in favour of Salvador Allende . After Salvador Allende’s assassination and the Military Coup by Augusto Pinochet, Neruda’s funeral became the first major precession against the military rule.

Pic 1: Harry Houdini – Regarded as one of the greatest ever escapologists , his name is now immortalizes in the “Houdini Escapes” performed by magicians the world over. He also was an ardent investigator of the spiritualist claims. (Infact his friend Arthur Conan Doyle believed that he was a powerful supernatural medium, performing his escaped with the help of his paranormal abilities). He also had a brief career as a movie producer.

Pic 2: Louis Braille – Blinded since the age of three, this teacher of the blind improved the “Barbier Point Writing system” used by the army to encode messages, to enable the blind to read. The writing system named after him, is used in numerous countries in a modified form. He also was famous as an organist and a violoncellist in Paris.

Pic 3: Simon Bolivar – Known as the liberator , he and General Jose San de Martin are considered to be most important figures of the struggle against Spanish colonialism in South America. He is credited as the liberator of Venezuela, Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Panama. His dream of a grand Latin American dreams was never realized. The republic of Bolivia, and the Venezuelan currency Bolivar are named in his Honour. The currently Venezuelan presedent Hugo Chavez calls himself the president of the Bolivarian Republic. A Cuban Cigar is also named after him.

Pic 4: Leonardo da Vinci – Considered to be one of the greatest geniuses ever, he distinguished himself as a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer. Best known for his painting “Mona Lisa” and fresco, “The Last Supper”. He also is known to have designed a flying machine. His “Vitruvian Man” was referenced in the best seller novel “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown.

Pic 5: Niccolo Machiavelli – A man of the Italian Renaissance, he served as the Secratary to the second Chancery to the Republic of Florence. Best known for his work “The Prince” , his other works include “ A discourse on the Art of War” , “The Mandrake” . His name has become synonymous with ruthless politics, deceit, and persuit of power at any cost. He was imprisoned by the Medici family after the defeat of the Florancian Republic. It was in imprisonment that he wrote “The Prince” he dedicated it to the Medici family in the hope that it would guarantee his return to public life.

Pic 6: Hubble Space Telescope – Named after the physicist Edwin Hubble, the telescope was carried to space by Space Shuttle Discovery in april 1990. It is one of NASA’s great observatories along with Compton Gamma Ray telescope,Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Spitzer space telescope.

Pic 7: Pulitzer Prize – Instituted in 1917 as per the will of Journalist and Newspaper tycoon Henry Pulitzer, it awards each year meritorious performance in the field of Public Service, Breaking News Reporting, Investigative Reporting, Explanatory Reporting, Local Reporting, National Reporting, International reporting, Feature Writing, Commentary, Criticism, Editorial writing, Editorial Cartooning, Breaking news photography, Feature Photography, Fiction, Drama, History, Biography/Autobiography, Poetry, General non fiction and Music.

Pic 8: Mae West- American Actress and anti-puritan icon , known for her films “She Done Him Wrong” , “Diamond Lil” , “Night after Night” and “I am no angel” amongst others. She also was a subject of a lot of paintings by surrealist painter Salvador Dali. During the second world war, the allied soldiers called their lifejackets,” Mae wests” partly from Cockney rhyming Slang for “Life Vest” and partly for the resemblance to her curvaceous torso.

Pic 9: Molotov Cocktail – Named derisively after USSR foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov by the Finns, it is a generic name used for a variety of improvised incendiary weapons. In its simplest form, it is a glass bottle containing petrol or alcohol, with a wick.

Background Pic: Mikhail Kalashnikov - Best known for his invention the AK assault rifle series, he was twice named the Hero of Socialist Labour. His most famous invention, the AK-47 (short for Avtovat Kalashnikova model 1947) , was a result of his participation in an Assault Rifle design competition in 1946 . AK-47 was made the soviet Army rifle in 1947. According to estimates there are some 100 million AK-47 assault rifles circulating. It has been used in the national flag of Mozambique, the flag of Hezbollah and numerous coat of arms.

Pic 1: Eddy Merckx - Considered to be one of the greatest cyclists of all time, he won the Tour-de France five consecutive times from 1969 till 1974. The record was later broken by Lance Armstrong . He was nicknamed as "The Cannibal", because he seemed to devour his competition.
Pic 2: Naim Suleymanoglu - Nicknamed "Pocket Hercules" because of his small stature. Born in Bulgaria, he later defected to Turkey. In order for him to compete in the 1988 Seoul olympics ,Turkey has to pay $1,000,000 to Bulgaria. He did not disappoint and won the featherweight gold for Turkey. In total he won three olympic, seven world, six european championships and earned 46 world records.
Pic 3: Oscar Pistorius aka Blade Runner - The South African paralympic runner, often called the "Blade Runner" or the "Fastest man with no legs" , he is a world record holder in 100m, 200m, and 400m . He runs with the aid of Cheetah flex foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs , made by Ossur. Initially, he was ruled in eligible to compete in the summer olympics by the IAAF, a decision that was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Oscar, hoever, did not qualify for the Summer olympics. He took the gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m in the 2008 Paralympics.
Pic 4: Haile Gebrselassie - Considered one of the greatest long distance runners in History, this Ethiopean was first noticed for running in a Marathon barefoot- and winning it. He competes in the distances between 1500m and Marathon. He suffers from Athletically induced asthma, which prevented him from competing in the Beijing olympics marathon.
Pic 5: Anatoly Karpov - KArpov became the youngest world champion in 1974,when the defending Champion Bobby Fischer refused to play Karpov. He successfully defended his world championship until, 1985 , when he was defeated by Gary Kasprov.Karpov,later won the FIDE championship in 1993 which he defended till 1998. Apart from chess, Karpov also took an active interest in politics and has been a member of the Public Chamber of Russia since 2005.
Pic 6: Billie Jean King - The former world no:1 , is best remembered for defeating Bobby Riggs in the much publicised exhibition match billed the "Battle of the Sexes". She won six wimbledon singles, 10 doubles and four mixed doubles titles in Wimbledon. In the US open, she won four singles and five doubles title. She also won singles title at the French and Australian open.
Pic 7: Rocky Marciano - He is the only undefeated heavyweight champion in professional boxing history. He was famous for weeping after knocking out his childhood hero Joe Louis. By the time hhe retired, he had a record og 49-0 with 43 knockouts.
Pic 8: Dhyan Chand - The Hockey wizard, he was instrumental in building up of the legend that surrounds the Indian Hockey team of 1920's - 40's . Once Don Bradman is believed to have commented that he scores goals like runs in cricket. Legends have it that impressed by his performance in the 1936 Berlin olympics, Adolf Hitler offered to make him a Field Marshal in the german army, should he decide to play for Germany.
Pic 9: Nadia Comaneci - The best known gymnasts of all time, this Romanian broke into limelight by winning three golds, on silver and a bronze in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She again won the individual golds in the floor excercise adnd balance beam events at the 1980 moscow olympicsShe is known as the first gymnast to score a perfect 10.
Background Pic: Lev Yashin -Nicknamed "The Black Spider" and "Black Panther" , he is considered by many to be the best goal keeper ever. The trophy for the best goal keeper in the world-cup competition is named after him. He is credited with inventing the idea of goalkeeper sweeping. He was part of the Soviet team that won the 1956 olympic gold and the 1960 European Championship.He won the European footballer of the year award in 1963.

Day 6 Answers :
1. Darfur - The map shows the three federal states of East, West and North Darfur. Darfur has been a hotbed of ethnic violence between the Arab tribes and the Non-arab tribes. There has been allegations that the Sudanese Government has been funding and supporting the Janjaweed , an Arab militia. The non-arab parties to conflict are the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice And Equality movement. There are allegations that these groups are helped by neighbouring Chad.
2. Hotel Rwanda – The Movie is based on the life of hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, against the backdrop of the Hutu-Tutsi conflict in Rwanda. The Ethnic conflict in Uganda took a toll, which according to estimates is between 800000 to 1000000. The Genocide was perpetrated by the Hutu Militias Interahamwe and Impuzamugambi which were supported the Hutu dominated government.
3. Jallianwala Bagh – The Public Garden in Amristar, where the British Indian Army soldiers commanded by Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer opened fire on civilians protesting against the arrest of Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal. The Official British Raj figures of the fatalities was 379, whereas according to other estimates it was as high as 1526.
4. Tiananmen Square - It has been witness to quite a few historically important events such as the proclamation of People’s republic of China by Mao. But perhaps it is best known for the brutal massacre of the pro-democracy protestors by the Chinese Government. The Official figures put the toll at 200-300, but according to other estimates, the fatalities could be ten times the official ones.
5. Hiroshima - This is the pic of the Atomic Bomb memorial mound that can be seen at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The annual 6 August peace memorial ceremony is held in this park every year. The purpose of the Peace Memorial Park is not only to memorialize the victims of the bomb, but also to establish the memory of nuclear horrors and advocate world peace.
6. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum – The Tuol Sleng genocide museum in Phnom Penh , was originally the infamous Security Prison 21 (S-21) used by the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot . Between 1975 and 1979,an estimated 17000 people imprisoned and tortured in this prison, out of which only 12 survived. After the Vietnamese invasion and the subsequent retreat of the Khmer Rouge, the S-21 was reopened as a genocide museum. The Museum , today, houses the photographs, bones and Skulls of the Victims. The Picture is that of the “Skull Map” of Cambodia composed of the skulls of the victims. The Map was dismantled in 2002.
7. Phan Thi Kim Phuc – More famous as the subject of a Vietnam war photograph by Nick Ut. The photograph was taken immediately after a Napalm bomb attack on her village by the South Vietnamese and the American forces. The photo shows a young Kim running naked, amongst other victims of the attack. The photograph was awarded the Pulitzer prize and the World Photo of the year in 1972. Later on, she took up Canadian citizenship, and has been residing there.
8. Chernobyl – The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station , located about 18Km away from the Ukranian City of Chernobyl, was the site of the worst Nuclear accident in history, in the year 1986. All the people living around the city of Chernobyl (Numbering 11600) had to be evacuated as a result of this. The impact of the radiation is believed have impoacted an area of 30 km radius. According to the Ukranian Health minister, around 2.3 million Ukranians suffer from health problems that can be linked to the Chernobyl disaster.

9. Robben Island – The island was home to the maximum security prison where more than 300 political prisoners were held by the Apartheid regime of South Africa. The former inmates included Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe, Govan Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Walter Sisulu among others. This Robben island was declared as a world heritage site in 1999.

Background Pic : Auschwitz – This was the largest concentration camp run by the Nazis. The words at the gate is translated as “ Work will set you free” . It was estimated that upto 1.1 million people had died in this camp, about 90% of which were Jews. In 1947, Poland founded a museum at the site of the Concentration Camp.

Mia Farrow played the role of Rosemary, for which she was nominated for the BAFTA award for the best actress. Ruth Gordon won the Academy award and the Golden Globe for the best supporting actress.

Pic 3: Battleship Potemkin : A silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein, is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. it was based on a mutiny by the sailors of the Battleship Potemkin in 1905. Particularly remembered for the use of montage in the famous Odessa steps firing sequence.

Pic 4: Apocalypse Now : Directed and Produced by Francis Ford Cuppola, this film is based on Joseph Conrad's novel " Heart of Darkness" . Won the Palm'd ore at the Cannes Film festival, and nominated for the Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Pic 5: A clockwork Orange: Directed by Stanley Kubrik, this film is based on a novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess.Set in a futurictic dystopian Britain, the language Nadsat is introduces in the novel. The film is supposed to have boosted the sales of Beethoven's ninth symphony. Nominated for the Best Picture, Best Director and the Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars.

Pic 6: Rashomon: One of the best known films of Akira Kurasawa, it is based on two short stories by Ryunusuke AKutagawa (Rashomon and In the grove). It was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival and and honorary academy award.

Pic 7: Lawrence of Arabia: Directed by David lean,this was based on the life of T.E.Lawrence. It won a total of seven Academy awards including the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Directon and Best Cinematography. Peter O'Toole was unsuccessfully nominated for the Best Actor Award, and it has eluded him in spite of being nominated eight times. Alec Guiness, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sherif, among others, lend support to the cast. I.S. Johar made an appearance as Gasim.

Pic 8: Two Women - "La Ciociara" in Italian, this Vittorio de Sica movie is based on a novel of the same name byAlberto Moravia. Anna Magnani was initially slated to play the role of Cesira, but eventually it went to Sophia Loren, who won an Academy award for the same.

Pic 9: Psycho- Easily the best known work of Alfred Hitchcock, it was nominated for four academy awards. The famous "Shower scene" in fact used chocolate syrup as a substitute for blood. The movie Spawned two sequels and a prequel as well as a remake directed by Gus Van Sant.

Background Pic: Seven Samurai - Yet another Classic from Kurasawa, the movie revolves around a bunch of samurai warriors hired by a village for protection against marauding bandits. The movie was adapted in Hollywood as the "Magnificient Seven" and was also a prime "inspiration" for bollywood movies "Sholay" and "Chinagate"

Pic 1: Liberia - The country was created in order to settle the freed slaves in the US. Hence the resemblence of the flags.

Pic 2: Abkhazia - The de-facto republic is recognized by Russia, Nicaragua and other unrecognized countries like South Ossetia and Transnistria.

Pic 3: Confederate States of America - The shortlived republic consisting of the pro-slavery southern states. This flag was called the blood stained banner. There were other flags used by the confederacy as well, such as the " stars and bars" and the "stainless banner" .

Pic 4: Jammu and Kashmir - The only state in India that has its own flag. This is in fact a modification of the flag of the National Conference. The three vertical white strips were added to reflect the regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Laddakh.

Pic 5: Uganda - The colours Black, Yellow and red were adopted from the flag of the Uganda People's congress, supposed to represent African Peoples (black),African Subnshine (yellow) and African brothehood (red) . The bird depicted is a Grey Crowned Crane, the national symbol.

Pic 6: Tibet - Called the Snow Lion flag, this was introduced in the reign of the 13th Dalai Lama. Now it is used by the Tibetean Government in Exile.

Pic 7: Niger - Put this flag just because of the similarity to the Indian National Flag. The three bands represent Sahara (Orange), The river Niger (White) and the fertile regions of South Niger (Green) and the orange circle representing the sun or independance.

Pic 8: Papua New Guinea: The Red and Black represent the traditional tribal colours of PNG. The constellation depicted is the Southern Cross, and the bird is a reggiana bird of paradise.

Pic 9: Hezbollah - The Flag depicts the word "Hezbollah" written in Arabic, a letter of which is extended as an arm clasping an AK-47. Hezbollah means the "Party of God" . The words "Islamic resistance in Lebanon is also mentioned beneath the logo.

Background Pic: Wales - Called the Y Ddraig Goch ( the red dragon), it is often believed to be the oldest national flag still in use.

1.Nilgiri Tahr - A species of goat-antelope endemic to the wastern ghats.
