Day 6: Result and Answers

Day 6 Answers :
1. Darfur - The map shows the three federal states of East, West and North Darfur. Darfur has been a hotbed of ethnic violence between the Arab tribes and the Non-arab tribes. There has been allegations that the Sudanese Government has been funding and supporting the Janjaweed , an Arab militia. The non-arab parties to conflict are the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice And Equality movement. There are allegations that these groups are helped by neighbouring Chad.
2. Hotel Rwanda – The Movie is based on the life of hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, against the backdrop of the Hutu-Tutsi conflict in Rwanda. The Ethnic conflict in Uganda took a toll, which according to estimates is between 800000 to 1000000. The Genocide was perpetrated by the Hutu Militias Interahamwe and Impuzamugambi which were supported the Hutu dominated government.
3. Jallianwala Bagh – The Public Garden in Amristar, where the British Indian Army soldiers commanded by Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer opened fire on civilians protesting against the arrest of Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal. The Official British Raj figures of the fatalities was 379, whereas according to other estimates it was as high as 1526.
4. Tiananmen Square - It has been witness to quite a few historically important events such as the proclamation of People’s republic of China by Mao. But perhaps it is best known for the brutal massacre of the pro-democracy protestors by the Chinese Government. The Official figures put the toll at 200-300, but according to other estimates, the fatalities could be ten times the official ones.
5. Hiroshima - This is the pic of the Atomic Bomb memorial mound that can be seen at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The annual 6 August peace memorial ceremony is held in this park every year. The purpose of the Peace Memorial Park is not only to memorialize the victims of the bomb, but also to establish the memory of nuclear horrors and advocate world peace.
6. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum – The Tuol Sleng genocide museum in Phnom Penh , was originally the infamous Security Prison 21 (S-21) used by the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot . Between 1975 and 1979,an estimated 17000 people imprisoned and tortured in this prison, out of which only 12 survived. After the Vietnamese invasion and the subsequent retreat of the Khmer Rouge, the S-21 was reopened as a genocide museum. The Museum , today, houses the photographs, bones and Skulls of the Victims. The Picture is that of the “Skull Map” of Cambodia composed of the skulls of the victims. The Map was dismantled in 2002.
7. Phan Thi Kim Phuc – More famous as the subject of a Vietnam war photograph by Nick Ut. The photograph was taken immediately after a Napalm bomb attack on her village by the South Vietnamese and the American forces. The photo shows a young Kim running naked, amongst other victims of the attack. The photograph was awarded the Pulitzer prize and the World Photo of the year in 1972. Later on, she took up Canadian citizenship, and has been residing there.
8. Chernobyl – The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station , located about 18Km away from the Ukranian City of Chernobyl, was the site of the worst Nuclear accident in history, in the year 1986. All the people living around the city of Chernobyl (Numbering 11600) had to be evacuated as a result of this. The impact of the radiation is believed have impoacted an area of 30 km radius. According to the Ukranian Health minister, around 2.3 million Ukranians suffer from health problems that can be linked to the Chernobyl disaster.

9. Robben Island – The island was home to the maximum security prison where more than 300 political prisoners were held by the Apartheid regime of South Africa. The former inmates included Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe, Govan Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Walter Sisulu among others. This Robben island was declared as a world heritage site in 1999.

Background Pic : Auschwitz – This was the largest concentration camp run by the Nazis. The words at the gate is translated as “ Work will set you free” . It was estimated that upto 1.1 million people had died in this camp, about 90% of which were Jews. In 1947, Poland founded a museum at the site of the Concentration Camp.
