Day 4: Results and Answers

Day 4 Answers:

Pic 1: Taxi Driver - Considered to be among the very best works of Martin Scorsese , it was awarded the Palm'd ore at the Cannes Film Festival. Nominated for the Best Picture, Best Actor and the Best Supporting Actress awards at the Oscars. "you lookin at me?"

Pic 2: Rosemary's Baby : Based on a novel of the same name by Ira Levin, Roman Polanski made his American debut with this movie. Mia Farrow played the role of Rosemary, for which she was nominated for the BAFTA award for the best actress. Ruth Gordon won the Academy award and the Golden Globe for the best supporting actress.

Pic 3: Battleship Potemkin : A silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein, is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. it was based on a mutiny by the sailors of the Battleship Potemkin in 1905. Particularly remembered for the use of montage in the famous Odessa steps firing sequence.

Pic 4: Apocalypse Now : Directed and Produced by Francis Ford Cuppola, this film is based on Joseph Conrad's novel " Heart of Darkness" . Won the Palm'd ore at the Cannes Film festival, and nominated for the Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Pic 5: A clockwork Orange: Directed by Stanley Kubrik, this film is based on a novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess.Set in a futurictic dystopian Britain, the language Nadsat is introduces in the novel. The film is supposed to have boosted the sales of Beethoven's ninth symphony. Nominated for the Best Picture, Best Director and the Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars.

Pic 6: Rashomon: One of the best known films of Akira Kurasawa, it is based on two short stories by Ryunusuke AKutagawa (Rashomon and In the grove). It was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival and and honorary academy award.

Pic 7: Lawrence of Arabia: Directed by David lean,this was based on the life of T.E.Lawrence. It won a total of seven Academy awards including the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Directon and Best Cinematography. Peter O'Toole was unsuccessfully nominated for the Best Actor Award, and it has eluded him in spite of being nominated eight times. Alec Guiness, Anthony Quinn and Omar Sherif, among others, lend support to the cast. I.S. Johar made an appearance as Gasim.

Pic 8: Two Women - "La Ciociara" in Italian, this Vittorio de Sica movie is based on a novel of the same name byAlberto Moravia. Anna Magnani was initially slated to play the role of Cesira, but eventually it went to Sophia Loren, who won an Academy award for the same.

Pic 9: Psycho- Easily the best known work of Alfred Hitchcock, it was nominated for four academy awards. The famous "Shower scene" in fact used chocolate syrup as a substitute for blood. The movie Spawned two sequels and a prequel as well as a remake directed by Gus Van Sant.

Background Pic: Seven Samurai - Yet another Classic from Kurasawa, the movie revolves around a bunch of samurai warriors hired by a village for protection against marauding bandits. The movie was adapted in Hollywood as the "Magnificient Seven" and was also a prime "inspiration" for bollywood movies "Sholay" and "Chinagate"
